Family's compo battle for lung disease relative

Albert Calvert with wife Carol and son Mark

THE family of a man dying from an incurable industrial disease are demanding the creation of a compensation scheme.

Former labourer Albert Calvert, 74, spent much of his working life handling deadly asbestos, leaving him with debilitating pleural plaques which have scarred his lungs.

His heartbroken son Mark has revealed his father — now a wheelchair user who has difficulty breathing — often says he wishes his life were over.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown last week pledged to help victims of pleural plaques win compensation, following on from a campaign by our sister paper The Chronicle which calls for justice for workers exposed to asbestos.

However, Albert, of Guisborough, Teesside, falls into minority of people left in compensation limbo.
