Flood hero's in at the deep end again

Russell Pickering and partner Michelle Campbell

A HERO jeep driver who rescued stricken bus passengers during the floods is gearing up for another challenge.

Russell Pickering, 46, waded through water to rescue six cars and a bus full of people stranded during the deluge which struck Morpeth, Northumberland last year.

The financial advisor and his fiancee Michelle Campbell, of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland, did not hesitate to help the people trapped in the torrent and managed to tow the vehicles to safety using his Land Rover Defender.

Now the pair are preparing for another adventure, and hope their flood experience will stand them in good stead.

They originally applied to take part in next year’s Macmillan 4x4 UK Challenge, a 1000-mile treasure hunt over fields and roads across the UK and beyond.

But once again they have been thrown in at the deep end and will be racing 12 months earlier than expected, with all cash going towards Macmillan Cancer Support.

Russell said: “It’s like a treasure hunt over two days. We know we’re starting in Shropshire and finishing in Daresbury, in Cheshire, but we don’t know anything other than that.
