Flood hero's in at the deep end again

“Last year the teams ended up all over the place, some went to Ireland and Scotland and Wales.

“The challenge is over two days so we will have to sleep in the car for two nights. I’m not particularly looking forward to that part. Some of the driving could be quite treacherous.”

Their vehicle has been fitted out with winches and snorkels to ensure it can plough through water . . . something that came in handy during the Morpeth floods.

Russell said: “When it came to pulling the bus out of the water I knew the vehicle could do it. The water was up to my chest but we knew the engine was sealed.”

Michelle, 29, added: “I’m really looking forward to it, though I’m in charge of navigating as well and I can’t read a map, so there could be a bit of shouting along the way.

“It’s going to be a learning curve, but it’s great to do something we love and raise money for charity.”

The couple are driving one of nine vehicles in the BOFA (Breath of Fresh Air) 4x4 team, and each entrant pays for their own expenses and fuel.
