Mike Neville's kindness was a step too far

TELLY legend Mike Neville has told how an act of kindness for a fan left him with a broken bone at a showbiz bash.

Mike — a North icon who was the former newsreader for both BBC’s Look North and Tyne Tees’ North East Tonight news shows — broke his collar bone when he fell down steps at Newcastle Civic Centre.

He was attending a star-studded Variety Club event to honour celebrity couple Denise Welch and Tim Healy when he suffered the fall.

He said: “It was a silly thing. We were just getting ready to leave the Civic Centre and were next to the marble steps outside the banqueting suite when a chap asked for my autograph and a photograph.

“So, of course I said yes, then I took one step back and there you have it.”

“I’m OK, but it’s just frustrating because I can’t do a lot for myself, so my lovely wife Pam is having to help me with everything.

“The pain is a bit of a bother and doesn’t let me sleep too well, but what can you do?

His pals Tim and Denise received the charity’s prestigious Silver Heart award for their tireless work for charity and contribution to the entertainment industry.
