Mike Neville's kindness was a step too far

The show was attended by a host of showbusiness and sports stars including Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler, Loose Women TV presenter Jane McDonald, Denise Robertson and football legends Sir Bobby Robson and Peter Beardsley.

Mike added: “It was such a shame because it was such a great day and I loved every minute of it.

“They’re such a lovely couple. I’ve adored them ever since I met them so many years ago. They’re so caring and considerate.

“When I had my embolism a few years ago, Tim called in the evening at around 9.15pm. He’d just found out what had happened and was ringing during the interval in Billy Elliot. That’s the kind of people they are.

“We were actually due to go to the party Tim and Denise were having at The Vermont Hotel on Friday. I was really looking forward to it because I hadn’t had a drink all day . . . I was working.

“Sod’s Law I suppose.

“But one good thing has come out of it all . . . I’ve learned to type with my right hand.

He added: “I’m just wearing a sling, but I’m not sure how long it’s going to take to heal. When I went to the fracture clinic last Saturday, they were talking about physiotherapy, but I’ll know more when I go back this week.”
