Animal magic helps raise Comic cash

CROWDS of children raised cash for Comic Relief by disguising their bikes as animals.

The wacky event at Ryton Junior School in Gateshead — which saw bikes dressed up as crocodiles, penguins and spiders arrive in the playground — was also a day to remember for one lucky boy.

Eight-year-old Cameron Straughan was awarded a custom-made cycle with his name painted on the crossbar.

He beat thousands of pupils nationwide in an art contest to design a flag that captures the essence of riding a bike.

Cameron said: “My old bike was quite heavy and was quite hard to ride. This one is lighter and I’m going a lot faster on it.”

The competition was part of a campaign by cycle charity Sustrans.
