Hit-and-run girl in hospital after leg operation

A TODDLER is recovering in hospital after being struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Little Alishba Khan was lucky not to have been killed when she was hit outside her home by a car at 50mph.

The three-year-old was climbing into the passenger seat of her dad’s car when in Newcastle when she was hit.

Devoted dad Athar Khan said the first thing he knew was when he heard his daughter’s screams.

The 47-year-old taxi driver, said: “I was going to drop her at her nursery on Westgate Road. Alishba insisted she wanted to sit on the front seat with me.

“Our car has a sliding door and I got in first and was opening it for her and then — bang. The car came down the road, it all happened so quickly.

“She was screaming. I carried her back into the house and I could see that her right ankle was abnormal. It was twisted around. I was completely shocked that someone could just drive away . . . it’s so cowardly.”

The accident happened outside the Khan’s home in Shipley Avenue in Fenham, Newcastle, at around 2pm on Friday. Alishba’s brother Sabih fears it could only be a matter of time before someone is killed by a speeding car using the street as a rat run.

The 14-year-old said: “As soon as her door opened a car came speeding down the road at about 40 to 50mph.
