Alishba underwent surgery yesterday on her dislocated ankle. Athar said: “She’s a brave little girl and I think she’s liking all the attention now.

Athar and wife Rana have three other children, Sabih, Ayesha and Saboor. Athar said he hopes drivers will take more care in the neighbourhood.

Police launched a hunt for the driver of the car, which reportedly screeched to a halt after the collision, before leaving in the direction of Hadrian Road, and arrested a 22-year-old man.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop after an accident and has been bailed pending further enquiries.”
