Holly Brown romps in at the Grand National

Holly Brown, 24, from Corbridge, who competed in the Grand National

A STUD groom took centre stage yesterday to race in front of the Grand National crowd and raised thousands of pounds for charity.

Holly Brown was one of 10 members of the public who won through a ballot to ride in the John Smith’s People’s Race before the main event at Aintree, near Liverpool.

The 24-year-old, from Corbridge in Northumberland, works at Chesters Stud Farm in Chollerford, Northumberland, and has spent the last few years grooming and rearing some of the country’s finest race horses.

But it was her turn to get in the saddle in the first race on yesterday’s card and she claimed a place by coming home in fourth.

For her efforts Holly, who has been horseriding since she was three, took home £5000 for charity which she is giving to the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre in Lancashire.

Almost lost for words, Holly said: “It was so amazing. I’ve never had a day like this before.
