Apprentice contestant Rocky backed by customers

HE’S a sandwich mogul who Sir Alan Sugar booted off The Apprentice for botching up a catering task.

But regulars at Rocky Andrews’s sandwich shops across the North East have given the Speedy boss the thumbs-up. . . along with his former pro-football pals at Middlesbrough.

Rocky’s Olympic-themed grub of peanut butter sandwiches and chicken tikka vol au vent went down like a lead balloon with the City high-fliers on the show this week.

Despite being tipped as “the right bloke for the job” by Sir Alan Sugar, Rocky’s team were beaten by their female rivals.

Bookies’ favourite Rocky – whose salary of £100,000-plus dwarves that on offer from Sir Alan anyway – became the second candidate of this series to be fired.

He blamed his departure on southerners taking themselves too seriously . . . so we decided to put his theory to the test.

We went to his sandwich takeaways in the heart of Newcastle, talking to customers and letting our tastebuds do the work.

Both Speedy shops – one on Collingwood Street and the other on Market Street – bill themselves as “feeding the people” and offer a varied selection of sandwiches, jacket potatoes, soups and salads.
