Shearer's debut game marred by defeat

Trouble between rival fans

VIOLENCE flared in Newcastle city centre last night as football fans clashed in the aftermath of the Toon’s defeat to Chelsea.

Police were called to the Central Station area of Newcastle after receiving calls reporting fans fighting in the street.

The fracas between Newcastle, Chelsea and Rangers fans kicked off at around 7pm.

Onlookers said people were injured after fighting spilled out onto Neville Street.

But when police arrived no one would make a complaint and those hurt refused medical assistance or to be taken to hospital.

Unable to make arrests, the police officers calmed the situation down and separated and dispersed the rival groups.

By 7.45pm both the Rangers and Chelsea fans were on their trains back home.
