Police identify body in River Ouse

A BODY found in a North river was that of a widow who had gone missing 10 days earlier, police have revealed.

Pauline Armitage, 68, from Doncaster, was found in the River Ouse in York, near the Archbishop Dr John Sentamu’s residence on Friday afternoon.

Initially, it was feared the body may have been that of 35-year-old missing university chef, Claudia Lawrence, who has not been seen for more than four weeks.

However, North Yorkshire Police ruled that out last night, as well as the body being that of missing 36-year-old Lisette Dugmore, also from York.

Police confirmed the identity of the body yesterday, saying Mrs Armitage went missing on April 7.

Inspector Dave Sutcliffe said: “The circumstances of Mrs Armitage’s death are being investigated but at this time it is not being treated as suspicious.”

Mrs Armitage’s family made pleas for help in tracing her while she was missing.
