Girl saves her family from blaze

A FOUR-year-old girl has been hailed a little hero after saving her family when a blaze ripped through their home.

Little Megan Straker sprang into action as the house filled with smoke from an unattended chip pan, which had set alight.

Flames leapt towards the roof of their upstairs flat as the plucky youngster ran to wake up her family.

With no smoke alarm in the terraced house, in Walker, Newcastle, the family only have Megan to thank for saving their lives.

The shocking events that led to brave Megan’s quick-thinking are clearly only just sinking in as she is too scared to enter the kitchen.

All the traumatised St Lawrence Primary School pupil could say was: “It was very scary, I think the cooker had been left on.

“I don’t want to go in the kitchen as there might be a fire.”

Full-time mum Katie Bowman was in shock after the frightening fire but said she was very proud of her daughter. The 21 year old told the Sunday Sun how she was woken up by her daughter to find the flat filled with smoke.

She said: “I can’t believe that Megan woke us up. As we don’t have any fire alarms we wouldn’t be alive now, if it wasn’t for her.

“We had a few friends over for a drink and someone put the cooker on and then left.
