“We didn’t even know it was on, so we all went to bed. Suddenly I was woken up by Megan who said there was a fire. I didn’t believe her, but then I started coughing. I was terrified once I realised how smoky it was.”
Katie’s boyfriend Paul Tweedy, 27, made sure everyone was awake and safely outside before a passerby alerted the fire service.
She added: “Megan was so brave, it was very frightening for her. She won’t even go in the kitchen now. I’m going to get her lots of toys.
“We are all dead proud of her, she is our hero. She saved all our lives.”
Proud gran-of-six Jackie Donaghey, 48, said: “We are only still here because of Megan.
“Megan is very special and I love her to bits. There were six of us in the house, so without Megan’s quick thinking none of us would have survived. I think she was scared but she got help.”
Two fire crews from Fossway fire station, in Newcastle, were called out to the fire at around 6.45am on Saturday.
Crew manager Roy Lewis said the family were very lucky to survive the blaze and made sure fire alarms were installed in the flat.
He said: “A chip pan had been left unattended and there were no smoke alarms in the house. A young child raised the alarm as everyone was asleep
“They were very lucky she raised the alarm. It could have been a different story, especially as they didn’t have any smoke alarms.”
