Five students had contact with illness
FIVE students at Newcastle University have been confirmed as having contact with the confirmed case of swine flu reported in the city last week.
An email about the virus was sent to all students at the university and confirmed that the students confirmed as contacts had been offered anti-viral drugs as a precaution.
A copy of the email, obtained by the Sunday Sun, reads: “A further two Newcastle University students have been identified as contacts of the case of swine flu. This brings the total number of student contacts to five.
“The advice from the HPA for contacts of a confirmed case of swine flu is that, if they have no flu-like symptoms there is no need for them to isolate themselves, even if they are medical students or healthcare workers.”
So far, there has only been one confirmed case of swine flu in the North East. The Health Protection Agency advised it is safe for students and staff to attend Newcastle University, including those in the schools attended by students who have been in contact with the confirmed case. The Department of Health has set up a swine flu information line for the public on 0800-1513 513.
