“He was just walking with a girl, and they were going to the shop. This lad turned to him and said, what did you say. He said, I wasn’t talking to you. And then he just punched him. He fell and whacked his head on the concrete.
“It wasn’t like they targeted him because he’s gay or anything, it was just totally random.

Doctors operated overnight to remove the clot, and Charlie was left with a long scar across his skull.
Despite his ordeal, Charlie was determined to follow his dreams, and vowed to carry on auditioning for Big Brother until he was accepted.
Third time lucky, he was plucked from the auditions to win a place this year on the 10th series of the reality TV show.
Sara, who works as a customer service adviser for National Express, said: “He tried for the past two years, and he got really close last year. I don’t know how many were left in, but he had to go to London for the next round.
“I went with him, and when he didn’t get in he was gutted. He was so happy when he got in this time.
“I think he has got a good chance of winning. All the people I have spoken to absolutely love him.
“He went on because it’s something he always wanted to do. He loves the programme and wanted to be on it.
“He is such a lovely person, he really deserves it.
“I’m dead proud and I do hope he gets to the final. He says if he did win that I would have to go to all the parties with him. I don’t think he’s thought much further ahead than that!”
