It also follows the tragic stabbing of Callum Henderson, 41, outside a house in Glamis Hill, Berwick, Northumberland, last weekend. The father of two girls was killed after a commotion erupted outside the house.
And, the figures come during the ongoing court case into the stabbing of Deka Kennedy who died after he was knifed in the groin in South Shields, South Tyneside.
Recently the sister of knife victim Samantha Madgin supported our sister newspaper the Journal’s campaign to raise awareness of knives.
Carly Madgin praised The Journal, Northumbria Police and Creative Arts North for launching a songwriting contest to encourage youngsters to say “no” to knives.
Samantha, 18, died when Jordan Jobson stabbed her in frenzied attack in a Wallsend back alley in August 2007. She had been on a first night out after the birth of son Callum 10 weeks earlier.
Samantha’s mother Alison said: “I’m not shocked that so many people are being stabbed.
“I’m sick of talking to people who can make the changes and the difference because all they ever do is talk and then take no action.
“Unless they get a grip on this problem then nothing will change. The police are doing all they can to stamp this out but the justice system just keeps letting these people off.
“The law must be changed so life means life in prison and not a pathetic 12 years or less.”
