TV presenter Carol Malia gives birth to baby girl

TV presenter Carol Malia, with husband Gary Hudson and new baby Anna

FORGET Premier League goalkeepers, the safest pair of hands in the country belong to Carol Malia’s midwife.

The popular presenter gave birth to a beautiful baby girl called Anna in the early hours of Thursday morning, at Newcastle’s RVI.

And Carol revealed Anna made such a speedy entrance that her midwife had to race to catch the tiny tot, because her mum didn’t even make it to the delivery table.

Now relaxing back home with Anna, who weighed 7lb 8ozs, the Look North presenter told how she and husband Gary Hudson had to make a swift journey to Newcastle’s RVI in the early hours of Thursday morning.

She said: “It was quite a long run-in.

“Contractions actually started on Tuesday evening so I had a good 30 hours of labour.

“Some of them were quite far apart so I just stayed at home, having lots of baths . . . but I stayed at home a little bit too long, so we had an ‘interesting’ drive along the A69.

“Thankfully the roads were pretty clear at two thirty in the morning and we got straight into the hospital.

“That was a godsend . . . if Anna was born at the garage at Heddon it wouldn’t have been a very glamorous entrance.

“The baby’s head was virtually crowning when I arrived at the hospital and I didn’t even make it onto the delivery bed.

“I stood up and the baby just popped straight out . . . the midwife would make a good goalie because she had to catch this baby.

“It didn’t make for an easy catch either. If she had not been so quick with her hands goodness knows where she would’ve ended up.”
