Doug Henderson to quit the Commons

“I have told the general management committee that I would be a political activist as long as I have breath in my body and I am looking forward to working with those who will take over the responsibility.”

Mr Henderson won with a majority of 7023 at the last General Election.

Hilary Armstrong, MP for North West Durham. and one of Labour’s longest serving chief whips, also announced her departure at the next General Election.

Ms Armstrong said of her decision to stand down after 22 years: “It is time for the next generation. I will be 65 at the end of next year and feel it is time to let someone else take up the role.”

Ms Armstrong denied that her decision had anything to do with the MPs’ expenses scandal after she paid back £5500 for food claims that “weighed on her conscience”.

Jim Cousins, Labour MP for Newcastle Central, announced last month that he was stepping down and Alan Milburn, MP for Darlington, arrived at the same decision a week ago.
