WITH the holidays just weeks away, families in the North are being urged to get on their bikes and enjoy the great outdoors.
As the second phase of the Government’s Change4Life campaign gets under way, Derwensitde-based Try 5, is gearing up for a summer of cycling fun.
The project aims to encourage young people in target areas to try out a variety of physical activities, with the emphasis being on enjoyment as opposed to performance.
And leading the way in getting on the saddle, are the Young family, who have taken up cycling together around their home area and are taking their bikes on holidays in Britain.
George, his wife Stephanie, and three children Harry, 10, George, eight, and Grace, five, love spending time together on their bikes.
George, 42, of Low Fell, said: “We’ve all really enjoyed getting out and about on our bikes.
“Obviously, with Grace only being five, we do easy, fun routes, like ones along the Quayside and at Newburn. It’s a great chance to go out all together, as a family, and it’s good to get fresh air and keep active.
“I think it’s good for kids to see their parents taking part too - it makes exercise and cycling feel normal, rather than something different.”
