Zahra, who lives with parents Sammy and Lynn, explained: “I drive all over the region in my job and I am quite happy to use motorways when they are free from congestion.
“But the area around the Angel of the North is rarely free from traffic hold-ups, especially in the morning.
“My alternative route takes me 35 minutes at whatever time of day.”
Zahra, who drives a Suzuki Swift, added: “It’s a series of beautiful, winding country lanes.
“The best bit about is that if you look to your right as you meander through the open country lanes, you see hundreds of angry commuters on the A1.”
