Statistics show numbers of noisy North neighbours

“It remains a problem though. There have been a number of cases in which groups of young people are shouting abuse at neighbours and causing them problems.”

While councils across Northumberland received just 138 complaints in the last year – the eighth lowest in the country – councils in Cumbria were hit with 2280 complaints.

Barrow-in-Furness led the way in noise complaints, with 610 in the last year.

Meanwhile, noise control teams in Durham received 719 complaints – 547 of which were made in Darlington – but only five noise abatement orders were served on noisy neighbours.

A spokeswoman from Durham County Council said measures were in place to stamp out persistent offenders.

She said: “If someone has an issue with noise they can contact their local authority, or email us, and the complaint will be taken up by our environment protection department.

“It would be assessed and if it was deemed an urgent matter, then someone would plan an immediate visit.

“If it was not deemed urgent, then we would use the procedure of keeping records to provide evidence.”

The figures were accessed by Rockwool – an insulation company – under the Freedom of Information Act.
