Donna joked: “He actually tipped me out of a canoe at one point in the course, so it’s a miracle we’re together!
“But seriously, we just got chatting while we were there . . . we were both single, so decided to meet for a date.
“I was living in Chilton at the time and Mark was living in Blyth, so we met up in Durham City.
“Mark lost his keys while we were out, so it didn’t quite go to plan, but when we walked back to his car they were actually still in the car . . . the doors were open and the radio was blasting out music too!”
The pair soon moved in together into a house in Trimdon, and got engaged four years ago . . . and they had been saving every penny for yesterday’s big day.
Donna, who is an aqua aerobics instructor and an NHS resuscitation trainer, said: “Every girl wants to have the fairytale wedding and we both wanted to have an unusual venue rather than a traditional one.
“So much work has gone into today, and just seeing it all come together and being with Mark has been brilliant.”
Jill Williamson, general manager of Sedgefield Racecourse, said: “This is a thrilling moment for us all at the racecourse . . . our first wedding.
“We are delighted for Mark and Donna and wish them all the very best for the future.”
