Film tribite to nuke blast kids

Thirty people died in the explosion, but it is thought thousands more will, or have died, due to the effects of radiation. Birth defects have increased by 22 per cent and live birth rates have fallen dramatically.

Ruth’s film, A Breath of Fresh Air, shows the 12 youngsters on outings to Diggerland in Langley Park, Durham, the beach at South Shields, a fire station and enjoying a game of football, England versus the Ukraine.

She then travelled to Chernigov to film the children in their home setting.

Anita added: “She did that to show the people of Weardale that the children who visited here were deserving of their support.

“They really do live in poverty, in crowded tenement blocs. But the physical difference in the children after their three-week visit was noticeable in any case.”

“Ruth is in the Ukraine at the moment. She made the film to encourage more host families to come forward to take in the youngsters for three weeks every year.”
