Shock over Stockton street death

Patricia Carberry, 66, said: “Cathy had had a hard time looking after her mum and her mum died recently.

“I’ve lived here for 12 years and it’s very quiet . . . this is beyond belief, it really is.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “The police knocked last night and said there had been a serious incident and then they left us wondering what had happened.

“The couple were nice people, no different from anybody else in the street.”

A woman, who also did not want to be named, said: “I’ve lived here 17 years and not very much happens in this street, it’s not a bad street. They were very nice people.”

A police statement said: “Police are appealing for witnesses after an incident at an address in Chestnut Square, Stockton, at around 12.40am Friday morning.

“Police were called to the address where a local 45-year-old woman was found with serious injuries. She was taken to North Tees Hospital and died later that morning.

“A 47-year-old man has been charged with murder.”
