Sunderland Air Show goes down a bomb

ONE of the last remaining Vulcan bombers in the world stunned crowds on Wearside yesterday as it made a majestic entrance at the Sunderland Air Show.

The opening day of the two-day event – celebrating its 21st birthday this year – saw a whopping 300,000 people line the seafront at Seaburn and Roker to watch a dizzying display of aerial acrobatics.

And the Vulcan Bomber, which ruled the skies during the Cold War and also served during the Falklands campaign, was the highlight of the day for many.

Crowd favourites the Red Arrows opened yesterday’s programme of events, which also included the world’s most advanced fighter aircraft, the Typhoon, or Eurofighter. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight also made its traditional fly-past, with a Spitfire, Hurricane, and Dakota.

Other highlights at the airborne spectacular include Merlin, Sea King and Chinook helicopters. Several teams also displayed jaw-dropping aerobatic mastery, including The Blades, the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team, and the Swift Glider team.
