On the ground, the arena programme included demonstrations by Sunderland’s adopted regiment, the 4th Field Regiment Light Gun Display, the Royal Marines Combat Display Team and The Band of HM Royal Marines Scotland.
The same breathtaking line-up is also promised today, starting at 12pm.
Yesterday’s opener was a far cry from last year’s disappointing opening, when sea fret rolled in and completely obscured the spectators’ vision. Sue Stanhope, air show director, said: “It’s been a fantastic day and everything which was due to fly has made its flight, which is such a relief after the disappointment we had on the opening day last year.
“The Vulcan was most definitely the star of the show.
“It’s the first time we’ve had it here and I have to say it was very impressive.
“Sadly, the Vulcan won’t be taking part in Sunday’s show but we will still have the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain flight and the RAF Falcons, which have taken part in all 21 air shows.”
