North East Girl Guides gather for anniversary bash

THOUSANDS of Girl Guides enjoyed special centenary celebrations to mark the start of the organisation’s 100th year yesterday.

More than 3000 members from Girlguiding Durham North took part in a day of activities, in Bents Park, South Shields, as part of a national programme of events to see in the landmark birthday.

Guide leader Anne-Marie Cox, 39, of the Second Hedworth St Joseph’s guides, in Jarrow, said: “We offer them a unique opportunity to do something different. Things that they would never normally get the chance to do.”

Girlguiding UK offers girls and women the chance get involved in a range of different activities including outdoor challenges such as climbing, abseiling and canoeing.

Girl Guide Lauren, 12, of the First Winlaton unit, said: “You get the chance to do other things that you wouldn’t usually do. It’s great.”
