“From what people have been saying the injured lad could be in a bad way.
“There was blood on the walls and broken glass on the pavement outside.
“I walked past at about 11pm last night and nothing seemed untoward then, so the trouble must have broken out afterwards.”
Police spent several hours examining the scene before removing the cordon at around 1.30pm yesterday.
A local man who was in the pub at the time said: “All I can remember was an argument starting over a woman.
“One lad punched another on the mouth and then all hell broke loose.
“I don’t know how bad the injured lad is, but he is local. He must be in a bad way for the police to come out and cordon the place off.”
A spokeswoman for Durham Police said she was not prepared to release any information about the incident last night.
