Ryall got a job as a live-in house master at the children’s home in Newton Aycliffe soon after he graduated and he later held the post of director of social services at a council.

He also gained a PhD from Cambridge and became a professional adviser to a children’s committee in Wessex.

From 1974, he spent three years with Calderdale Borough Council on its child protection committee, looking into child abuse. He resigned as director of social services for Calderdale in 1988.

Aycliffe Approved School – also known as Aycliffe Young People’s Centre – fell under the microscope in the 1980s and 1990s, as a centre for some of the most notorious juvenile criminals.

Recent times have, however seen the County Durham centre greatly improve its reputation and it has gone on to become internationally-renowned for its work with troubled children.

Ryall has been bailed to appear before Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on October 15.
