Last orders at legendary Egypt Cottage pub

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save one of the North’s oldest pubs from demolition have told of their sorrow following the bar’s closure.

The Egypt Cottage in Newcastle called last orders for a final time last Sunday, after a valiant battle to remain open amid developers’ plans to demolish the site, together with the neighbouring Tyne Tees TV studio.

The pub has long been associated with The Tube, which was beamed live from Tyne Tees in the 1980s and featured a raft of rock and pop legends, many of whom spent time in the adjoining Egypt Cottage which became dubbed “studio six”.

Now, the Sunday Sun understands bulldozers working for owners Buccleuch Property will start levelling the buildings as early as next month, after the Edinburgh-based company claimed they had no choice but to raze the site as they were “haemorrhaging money” in paying to keep it open.

Landlady Caroline Zeldon says the closure feels like a family bereavement

She said: “It was such a happy place and the experience of running it made me a better person, meeting people from all walks of life, and proved that live music really does bring people closer together.

“It was such a happy place, so I feel devastated.

“I’m looking for a new venue now and I would welcome any suggestions.”
