News of the closure – which came after one final live music party last weekend – has saddened Liberal Democrat councillor Greg Stone and award-winning director Geoff Wonfor, who led the calls to prevent its loss.
Last night, Coun Stone blasted the building’s owners.
He said: “As I understand it, demolition starts on October 26 and then they will leave the site vacant.
“It’s all very sad and frustrating . . . there are no formal plans to develop the area at all, apart from possibly looking at using the land as a temporary car park.
“I know the owners said they were motivated by financial constraints but they could have allowed the pub to stay open until a formal plan was in place.”
Geoff Wonfor lamented the Egypt’s closure, but welcomed news that the last tenants were searching for a new venue in a bid to keep their popular live music nights going.
Geoff, who was at the forefront of the making of The Tube, said: “It’s very sad. I have so many gorgeous memories of the place.
“Jools Holland was really behind it, he loved the place.
“I wish them all the luck in trying to find a new venue and if there is anything I can to do to help I will.”
