Mev Stewart from South Shields used to live next to Joe’s nana, and her son Adam used to play with Joe when they were younger.
She said: “I hadn’t heard him singing a lot before but it’s fabulous. I think he can go all the way – in all the auditions I think he’s got it.”
Kim Jefferson works in South Tyneside Hospital with Joe’s Aunty Sue.
She said: “I reckon he can get in the top three.”
Meanwhile, family friend Maresa Brand, who teaches at Monkwearmouth School, is also raising support.
She said: “All the kids have been voting for him. I’m doing an assembly if he gets through about role models and achievements.”
Joe himself did his South Shields supporters proud with a flawless rendition of Robbie Williams’ No Regrets.
Simon Cowell heaped praise on him after the show-stopping performance, saying his singing was “absolutely brilliant”.
He told Joe: “You are a little dark horse. Louis is right – you are the one to watch,” which got the crowd fired up and cheering.
Cheryl said to him: “As my dad would say – go on son, get in there!”
Joe and his followers will have to wait to find out whether he has done enough to stay in the competition, with the next instalment of X- Factor tonight.
