A FORMER soldier who was told he would never walk again has escorted his bride down the aisle.
Determined Carl Fice never dreamed he would be able stand side by side with Louise Howe and exchange vows before then walking arm in arm down the aisle in front of family and friends.
But that is exactly what the 33-year-old and his bride accomplished yesterday just over a year since a pioneering operation gave him the ability to walk again. Carl had been left heavily reliant on a wheelchair following a car accident 11 years ago which left him in a coma for three months and on the verge of death.
But last October innovative surgeons used a new technique to relocate tendons from his right thigh to his lower leg meaning he could regain the use of his legs.
Yesterday the couple, from Newcastle, exchanged vows at St George’s Church in Jesmond in a touching ceremony. Louise arrived at the picturesque church and was escorted down the aisle by her brother - who had originally introduced the couple.
Speaking after the ceremony Carl said: “It was everything we could have imagined. It was a wonderful ceremony. I couldn’t feel my legs at one point so I think I was a bit nervous.”
