Carl was serving at a military base near Hamburg in Germany in March 1998 when a car crash, which killed one of his friends, shattered his spine, pelvis and punctured his lungs.
He underwent a long a painful recovery over many years and last October top surgeon Malik Siddique performed an operation at Newcastle’s Freeman hospital which took tendons from Carl’s upper right leg and attached them to his right foot and lower limb, enabling his twisted joint to function again.
Since then Carl hasn’t looked back. He currently uses one crutch but has another operation planned for his other leg.
Louise, a 26-year-old accountant, said: “I am very proud of Carl. He is the most determined person I know and being able to walk down the aisle together as husband and wife was perfect.”
