Retired police officers set to appeal against pension cuts

Former PC Gerald Lang, from Whitley Bay, has seen his pension fall from £1,600 to £890.

Gerald, who served for 20 years, had to retire in 1991 after a drunken driver crashed into his car, leaving him with a broken chest bone and back injuries.

Gerald, 67, said: “The first appeal will be on December 12. We will be going down to assist the officer with his appeal.

“Many of our members are old and can’t understand the paperwork. I’ve had men on the phone to me nearly in tears.”

In August we told how 30 cops were sent “bullying” letters warning them they faced bills of nearly £7,000 if they chose to appeal and advising them not to fight the decision as they were “bound to fail”.

Officials from the National Association of Retired Police Officers claim this has led to some officers withdrawing their plans to appeal.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “As the appeal process is on-going it would be inappropriate to comment at this stage.”
