“We’re realistic and realise there’s a long way to go. It’s a huge target but if people keep doing all they can we believe we will do it.
“We need people to just keep ringing in and giving. No amount is too small.”
As well as our impressive first week’s haul of fundraising, the Sunday Sun has secured the backing of the Hairy Bikers.
Northumberland lad Si King and Cumbrian Dave Myers, the North’s favourite culinary combo, were more than happy to back our campaign, which will continue to come to the rescue of road users.
Just last month Si suffered minor injuries after coming off his bike, in Newcastle.
He said: “The Air Ambulance is an invaluable service to rural areas like Northumberland, for getting patients to major centres for medical treatment.”
Dave added: “Of course we support the campaign. The service is hugely important.”
Doctor-turned-Gladiator Amazon, aka Zoe Williams, has also given her support.
“Being able to get a doctor to the scene of a serious injury can be crucial. As a sports fan I’m aware how on the rare occasion there is a serious accident, particularly in contact sports like rugby, getting the patient to a hospital as quickly as possible is vital.
“I wish the Sunday Sun the best of luck with its Air Angel campaign.”
Until now the GNAA has offered a magnificent service with its three leased aircraft.
But, as an occasion earlier this year showed, administration demands and service requirements can lead to a situation where none of the helicopters are available to fly.
This can’t be allowed to happen as the GNAA has become an integral part of our emergency services.
Owning instead of leasing means the public donations the charity relies on to operate will go even further in the future.
