The shows have been inspired by the 1300-year glass making history in the North East, National Glass Centre’s publicly accessible hot glass production studio and the 2000-year tradition that sees Chinese Acrobats transform ordinary domestic vessels with daring feats of skill.
The whole project was devised and directed by artist Rose English, as part of a work-in-progress, and it formed part of the region’s Wunderbar Festival, a dynamic new festival showcasing performance art and unusual events, which was launched at the start of the month.
Rose, an actress, director and writer, has been involved in the arts for more than 30 years and has performed in venues as varied as Tate Britain in London and the Lincoln Centre in New York.
Handblown glasses were her prop of choice for Flagrant Wisdom, but she has been known to team up with musicians, dancers, magicians and even horses in the past.
Free tickets are available for today’s performances, which take place between 2-3pm and 3-4pm, but booking is required.
Please contact the National Glass Centre 0191-515 5555 or Dance City 0191-261 0505 to book.
