Newcastle shoppers sell Jimmy Choo shoes on Ebay

A few days after the in-store scrum, 51 items were listed on the online auctioneer by sellers in the North East, and half of those were snapped up within days. As we went to press, 23 were still up for grabs, including a blue suede dress being sold in the “Buy Now” only section by a Newcastle seller for £250, even though it retailed at £149.99.

The same seller was also selling high-heeled leather boots, which cost £99.99 in the shop, for £200.

Many others from elsewhere in the UK were demanding more than £400 for boots and bags which cost them £300 less.

Economy expert Dinah Bennett, director of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning at Durham University, said the practice of buying goods just to sell on eBay often irritates folk.

She said: “When ticket touts are involved people get annoyed, but there is no law to stop someone from buying something in a shop and putting it on eBay.

“If someone has bothered to queue for hours to buy a pair of shoes and then wants to sell them on to make a profit, well good on them.

“It’s the darker side of entrepreneurial business, but there’s nothing to stop anyone from doing it.

She added: “It’s all about supply and demand, and where there is a demand people will always buy.”
