South Tyneside councillors plan reception for squaddies

“My son was in the Royal Navy for many years, so I have some understanding of how it feels to have loved ones in danger.

“Like every mother I was very proud, anxious and worried but I tried not to show it when he came home for visits. I understand how people feel.

“It’s about the people who are out there now and showing them that what they are doing is worthwhile.

“There will be a civic reception and then some form of march past. Everyone in the council chamber from all parties agreed that this was the right thing to do.”

And Coun Alan Kerr, Labour representative for the Monkton Ward, added his words of support for the event.

“We thought we would remember all the others who have fought and try to say thank you to them.

“Their sacrifices need to be recognised and they have made lots of them. Some have paid the ultimate price and others have been badly injured

“They have done a hell of a job out in all the conflicts they have been involved in and continue to be involved in.

“We have had the flag flying at the town hall while they have been away. They are serving their country, they are from here and we need to give them 100% support.”
