“The exhibition is really good, though, and I’m a huge Top Gear fan.”
George Lever, 49, a managing director from Acklam was equally dismissive.
He said: “I’m not into art and have never been that interested but it seems nice.”
Clarkson and his co-presenters chose to send up modern art with their unusual pieces, which were certainly eye-catching.
One of Jeremy’s pieces is a Formula One car covered in UV paint.
Another – a collaboration with Formula One racing driver David Coulthard – is called Paint on Aluminium, and was meant to depict “A soul that’s come out of the body and burst all over some metal”.
James May’s piece, Acceleration Face No. 1, is a cleverly-constructed sculpture of a face using old car parts apparently inspired by the cubist movement.
Richard Hammond’s addition is a painting covered in brown leaves called Modernist Haywain, which was meant to reflect modern society’s materialism.
The three presenters are also due to be at the exhibition today.
Mr Clarkson said: “Middlesbrough has gone up in my estimation because I just found out that Paul Rodgers was born here, the greatest living rock and roll legend.”
From tomorrow until next Sunday, tickets will not be required for the event, although a queuing system may be introduced.
