Darren Bent's mum is victim of racial taunt

Twitter is a cross between a social networking site and online blog.

Darren, 25, is a keen fan of the craze and has recently revealed how he got stranded in Newcastle when his car ran out of petrol on the Tyne Bridge. The goal ace and fans’ favourite then had to take a taxi to a petrol station to buy £5 worth of fuel.

He has 20,800 followers and has become known for his colourful postings, under the username DBTheTruth.

A Sunderland FC spokeswoman said: “Sunderland are liaising with Northumbria Police to fully investigate this matter. Behaviour of this kind is totally unacceptable to our football club.”

Martin McFadden, of Black Cats fanzine A Love Supreme, said: “Sunderland fans do not have a reputation for racism.

“It’s such a shame that a Sunderland fan is said to have done this as there is no room for racism at our club.

“Racism is wrong and Sunderland fans and the club have come out very strongly against it.

“Everyone is shocked by this. Darren is an England player who loves his country and the person involved in this disgraceful abuse should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.”

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “We are investigating a report that a woman was verbally racially abused following the Wigan match with Sunderland.

“Inquiries are continuing. Witnesses to the incident are asked to call 0161 8725050.”
