The husband, who has asked to remain unnamed while he concentrates on his wife’s recovery, thanked the GNAA for their speed and “professionalism”.
An Air Ambulance doctor, transferred to the scene by one of the charity’s emergency response cars travelled with the victim in the ambulance to hospital.
A spokesperson for the GNAA said: “We understand the patient was incredibly brave while she was being treated and never once moaned about her pain or discomfort.
“When we saw where the accident had happened we realised we wouldn’t be able to put down there so we landed on some grass then started waving at cars.
“A van and a car stopped and agreed to take us round with our medical bag.
“Getting to the scene quickly meant we could update the doctor before she arrived.
“Those were our vital seconds and we have no doubt it helped the doctor’s treatment.”
It is understood the helicopter put down on an open area of grass next to Bede Street.
Specialist lifting equipment was drafted in by fire and rescue teams to free the victim, who was left pinned against the road, under the delivery vehicle.
Watch manager Gary Cuthbertson, of Sunderland North Fire Station, said: “Fire service personnel lifted the rear of the vehicle using air bags from our specialist unit at Hebburn.
“That meant paramedics could put her on a spinal board to take her to hospital.”
Following the accident police have appealed to witnesses to contact them with information.
