HERO highway-cop Alan Kelly has met up with the baby he saved at the side of the road and told how the 13-week old child will be in his heart for the rest of his life.
Earlier this month traffic officer PC Kelly was carrying out routine patrols on the A1, near the Angel of the North in Gateshead, when he came across a panic-stricken mother whose baby had stopped breathing.
Realising he was the only person who could help the dying little girl, PC Kelly swung into action using his first-aid training for the first time in his eight-year career.
His quick-thinking and CPR brought the little lass back from the brink of death, as her then hysterical mother watched on.
The baby was allowed back to her Durham home on December 1 - the day after being admitted to Gateshead’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. And days later caring PC Kelly was around at her house firming up a bond that will be with him forever.
The 37-year-old said: “When I saw her again I felt so thrilled. She looked up at me and gave me a big smile. Her mum, dad and grandmother were all there and they were very grateful.
“They are a lovely family and I’m so glad everything turned out fine for them.
“The little baby is beautiful and I’ll have an attachment to her for the rest of my life. She’ll be on my Christmas card list.”
