Hero traffic cop PC Alan Kelly meets baby he saved

PC Kelly spotted the 24-year-old mother standing by a car with its hazard lights on at the side of the A1, at around 7.45pm on Monday, November 1.

Realising something must be wrong he turned round and went to her aid. When he pulled over he saw the baby was motionless and was not breathing. So he took the little girl and her mother into the back of his car and began giving the youngster the kiss of life. Within minutes the baby began breathing again and started to cry. “It was the biggest relief ever,” he said.

Shocked and relieved, PC Kelly then called for an ambulance. The baby was taken to hospital where she was kept in overnight for observation.

PC Kelly added: “I did what came naturally. I am a dad myself and I know what this would have meant.

“I’m so happy that I was there to save the little girl’s life - she’s very special.”

Mother and baby are eternally grateful but did not want to talk about their ordeal.

The baby’s grandmother, who does not wish to be named, said: “We are extremely grateful for the help of PC Kelly who saved my baby granddaughter. The police, ambulance crew and medical staff have all been outstanding.”

And Supt Jane Simmons, from the Northumbria Police operations department, added: “This is an excellent example of how our police officers are dedicated to serving members of the public.

“Our officers are trained in CPR but having to perform this procedure on such a young baby must have been terrifying for the mother of the child and PC Kelly.

“We are very proud of his quick and instinctive actions.”
