HAMSTER sales in the region have rocketed as youngsters opt for the real thing after stocks of a new toy sold out.
Stocks of battery-operated Mr Squiggles Go Go Hamsters sold out across the region following the toys becoming the “must have” Christmas present this year.
But animal experts are urging parents not to “Go Go” and rush out to buy a real hamster without thinking about it first.
Pet shops throughout the North have backed up claims that sales of the animals have increased following the toy’s launch.
Nicola Batty, manageress of Pets ‘n’ Things, on St George’s Road, Cullercoats, North Tyneside, said: “We would normally sell about five a week but that has doubled.
