Sex assault claim teacher suspended

A MALE teacher working at a North school has been suspended after a female pupil accused him of sexual assault.

The Sunday Sun can reveal a 40-year-old man was arrested earlier this week after the girl made the allegation.

School leaders moved swiftly to suspend the man from work as soon as the alleged incident came to light, it is understood.

The school where he teaches cannot be named for legal reasons, however, Northumbria Police have confirmed it is in North Tyneside.

Officers are now working in conjunction with North Tyneside Council on the investigation, which they say is still in its “early stages”.

The man was later bailed pending further inquiries and it’s also understood the man will be suspended – on pay – from his teaching post for the remainder of the investigation.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police released a joint statement on behalf of the force and the local authority.

She said: “We can confirm a teacher at a North Tyneside school has been suspended following an allegation of sexual assault on a female student, which is being investigated by Northumbria Police, supported by the local authority.”

The news of the arrest was revealed in the final week of term.
