The dad-of-two suffered wounds to his neck, face, head, back and shoulders in the late-night assault as he made his way home from work.

He was approached by 20-year- old Andrew Dougherty, who attacked him with a pair of scissors, screaming: “I will kill you”.

Dougherty, from Corporation Street, Stockton, was swigging wine as he approached Walter, before launching the unprovoked assault in which he stabbed him nine times.

He plunged the scissors into Walter’s back and shoulder before slashing his face and piercing his finger.

When Walter got to his feet he found a section of blade lodged in his neck behind his ear, such was the ferocity of the incident.

Dazed and blood-soaked, the 51-year-old pulled the shard from his flesh and called his family.

And last night Walter, who lives in the Downhill area of Sunderland, with his wife, Pauline, 49, a school kitchen assistant, said he was lucky to be alive.

He said: “He just came up to me and asked for a cigarette, and the next thing I knew he went up on his tiptoes and punched me. I tried to run but before I knew what was happening he was on top of me.

“I didn’t know at the time that he was stabbing me. He said he would kill me if I didn’t give him my money.

“He ran away with a couple of friends. It was then that I found the blade in my neck and pulled it out.

“I was frightened but I rang my daughter and told her I’d been stabbed. The police and ambulance came and cordoned off the scene.”
