A MAN was fighting for life in hospital last night after plunging from the icy roof of a North school during a suspected lead theft.
Emergency services were called to Meadowdale Middle School, on Hazelmere Avenue, in Bedlington, Northumberland, after the man was discovered by a passing dog-walker in the early hours of yesterday morning.
When police arrived, they discovered that a quantity of lead had been stripped from the roof and dumped at the scene.
Further inquiries revealed another man may have fled the scene before police arrived.
The injured man was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital, in Ashington, but was transferred by ambulance to Newcastle General Hospital with serious injuries.
He remains in a critical condition in hospital today.
A 36-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of theft.
Police have now warned of the dangers of climbing up buildings and on to roofs in such treacherous weather.
