Police moved to reassure residents and said they believed the killer was known to his victim.
Ch Insp Max Black, of North Tyneside area command, said: “We recognise that incidents like this heighten concerns for members of the public.
“However, at this stage it would appear this is an isolated incident between two people who knew each other and not a random attack on a stranger.
“Officers are carrying out their normal patrols to provide reassurance.”
One elderly woman who lives on the street, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s horrible to think this has happened on our street.
“I can’t get over it, I knew the fella to say hello to, it’s terrible and scary really.
“The police have been doing door to door inquiries but I never saw anything.”
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held at Etal Lane police station.
